The Power of a Dollar (My Rant)

THE POWER OF A DOLLAR (My Rant)

MIGHTY DOLARS!
Now before my betters (my elders) pipe in with  ..."back in my day",
I just want to say I was a child of the 70's. (& this is MY perspective!)
I wouldn't trade my childhood with anyone!

It sickens me that my boys will never know the joys
the power of the dollar had on my disposable income
throughout my childhood:

Every kid I knew got allowance or did chores, mowed lawns,
delivered papers, heck you could find money on the ground
or in the sofa, so a dollar was attainable (to all).

I bought comic books!

Remember those spinning wire comic racks?
*You always looked for the best (least bent) copy*

comic book prices over the years:
Comic Book Prices Over The Years

some of my first were 15¢:  Turok 15¢

but most of my comics were 20¢ such as: Where Monsters Dwell 20¢
or: Kamandi 20¢
or:  Swamp Thing 20¢

and then 25¢ such as: Man-Thing 25¢

and then 30¢: Godzilla 30¢

and then 35¢: Devil Dinosaur 35¢

and then 40¢: Star Wars 40¢
and: Micronauts 40¢

or even 50¢: Rom Spaceknight 50¢
but you get the idea!

the average candy bars were:
1970-74: 10¢
1975-79: 20¢
Candy Bar Prices

the cost of a can of soda (12oz.) was:
1970-74: 15¢
1975/76: 20¢
1977-79: 25¢

a pack of trading cards were: 10¢: Six Million Dollar Man Trading Cards 10¢

(Space 1999) 10¢: Space 1999 Trading Cards 10¢

(Star Wars) 15¢: Star Wars Trading Cards 15¢

So my dollar got me:
1970: 3 comics, a candy bar a can of soda & a pack of trading cards
1974: 2 comics, a candy bar a Slurpee & a pack of trading cards
1977: a comic, a candy bar a can of soda & 1pack of Star Wars cards
by 1979 most kids could get $2 and this got you:
2 comics, a candy bar a can of soda a pack of trading cards
& 2 games of  Space Invaders: http://youtu.be/437Ld_rKM2s

I freak my boys out when I tell them I went to McDonalds's
on a school field trip in 1974 and my one dollar bought:
a hamburger, french fries, a hot apple pie and a coke = 95¢
1974 McDonald's Menu

Now, I shudder to think how much it would cost to buy
the same amount of the above items when comics are $3.99 ea.,
candy bars are $1, can of soda the same (75¢ if your lucky)
I'm not sure what trading cards go for these days.

My long-winded point being, I just wish my boys could have
grown up in a time where their allowance would have let them
had as much purchasing power (i.e. FUN) as we did growing up!

A dollar in your hand meant endless possibilities,
the world truly was your oyster!

I apologize for any typos, if you made it this far:
Thanks for reading my rant. :)

Afterthought: If it was your birthday and you got $5 from Grandma!
Fuhgeddaboudit!

You were King Midas!
(Massive sugar rush & hours of fun!)
